Scott Coffel's “Toucans in the Arctic” was published in 2009 by Etruscan Press; it received the Poetry Society of America's 2010 Norma Farber First Book Award. Judge: Edward Hirsch.
In October 2013, Coffel won the Boston Review's Sixteenth Annual Poetry Contest. Judge: Linda Gregerson.
The poet was born in New York City, and educated at York College, a senior college of The City University of New York, and at SUNY-Oneonta. After working in Seattle, Washington for several years he attended the Iowa Writers Workshop, receiving an MFA in 1995. He is the Director of the Hanson Center for Technical Communication in The University of Iowa’s College of Engineering.
A 2009 MacDowell Colony fellow, his poems have appeared in Salmagundi, Boston Review (forthcoming), Ploughshares, Paris Review, Antioch Review, AGNI Online, The American Scholar, The Missouri Review, The Southern Review, The Wallace Stevens Journal, and other journals.
